Tourism creates opportunities for destinations and local communities, but it also comes with responsibilities. The way people travel, the places they visit, and where they spend their money can all have an impact on the environment, local businesses, culture, and natural resources. Sustainable tourism is about finding a better balance between these impacts and the benefits tourism can bring.
In simple terms, sustainable travel means reducing negative environmental and cultural impacts, supporting local communities, using resources responsibly, and creating experiences that can continue to benefit destinations in the future.
In 2022, DMO Albania launched Green Tirana, a sustainable tourism initiative and a branch of the Visit Tirana platform. The initiative encourages more responsible ways of exploring Tirana and its surroundings while helping tourism businesses adopt more sustainable practices.
Tirana is a rapidly developing capital, but its surroundings offer a very different experience. Mountains, villages, farms, agritourism destinations, cultural sites, and local communities are all within reach of the city. Green Tirana brings these places closer to visitors through sustainable tours, thematic itineraries, and locally based experiences.
The platform provides information about sustainable tourism and allows visitors to discover and book selected tours and activities in and around Tirana. Through digital communication and storytelling, experiences that may otherwise remain less visible can reach a wider audience.
The initiative also works directly with the tourism sector. Businesses, agritourism operators, guides, and other service providers receive support, training, and consultation aimed at improving sustainability practices and reducing their environmental impact.
One of the main results has been the development of 10 green tourism packages together with local businesses and tourism providers. The packages were designed in line with internationally recognized sustainability principles, including those promoted by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The packages offer visitors different ways to experience Tirana and its surroundings. Nature, local food, rural life, culture, and community-based activities are brought together to create experiences that feel more connected to the destination. At the same time, directing visitors towards local businesses and less-explored areas can help spread tourism benefits beyond the most visited parts of the city.
Community involvement is an important part of this approach. Supporting local producers, family-run businesses, agritourism operators, guides, and community-based services helps keep more of the economic value generated by tourism within the destination.
Environmental protection is equally important. Responsible use of resources, respect for nature, and greater awareness of local ecosystems can help visitors enjoy these places without putting unnecessary pressure on them. The goal is not to separate tourism from environmental protection, but to show that the two can work together.
Green Tirana also contributes to the way the city is presented as a destination. As sustainability becomes increasingly important to travelers, the initiative positions Tirana as a place where visitors can combine urban experiences with nature, local food, culture, and community-based tourism.
Digital communication supports this work through online storytelling, thematic content, tourism offers, and the promotion of sustainable businesses and experiences. It helps visitors find responsible options before and during their trip.
Ultimately, Green Tirana shows that sustainability is about more than protecting the environment. It is also about supporting local economies, preserving cultural identity, involving communities, improving visitor experiences, and creating tourism value that lasts.
Through Green Tirana, DMO Albania aims to encourage a shift away from focusing only on visitor numbers and towards tourism that creates meaningful experiences and long-term benefits for the places people visit.
Green Tirana is about travelling differently — discovering more, supporting local communities, respecting nature, and leaving a positive impact behind.
