Heritage is our brand

Heritage is more than monuments, historic buildings, and archaeological sites. It is also something we live with every day: the stories we hear, the traditions we follow, the skills we learn, the food we prepare, the music we listen to, and the knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

This living side of heritage is known as intangible cultural heritage. Unlike physical heritage, it cannot simply be protected behind walls or preserved in a museum. It survives through people and communities. Languages, oral traditions, music, dance, rituals, craftsmanship, cuisine, and local customs continue to exist because people practice them, share them, and teach them to others.

In Albania, intangible cultural heritage reflects the country’s long history, cultural diversity, and strong sense of community. Every region has its own traditions, stories, songs, dances, crafts, food, and customs. Together, they form an important part of Albania’s identity and offer a connection between the past and the present.

Heritage also has a role to play in education, tourism, community development, and cultural exchange. It helps people understand where they come from while creating opportunities to share their culture with others. For visitors, traditions and local stories can make a destination more meaningful, offering an experience that goes beyond simply seeing a place.

At the same time, living heritage faces growing challenges. Migration, changing lifestyles, global cultural influences, and the loss of traditional knowledge can make it harder for traditions to be passed on. When fewer people know a traditional craft, when stories are no longer told, or when songs and rituals are forgotten, an important part of cultural memory can slowly disappear.

Preserving heritage therefore means more than recording what existed in the past. It means finding ways to keep it relevant in the present and giving younger generations the opportunity to discover it, understand it, and bring their own ideas to it.

This is the idea behind “Heritage Is Our Brand,” an EU-funded project implemented by DMO Albania in collaboration with the EU Policy Hub. The project focuses on Albania’s intangible cultural heritage and explores new ways of connecting it with young people.

Through research, interviews, storytelling, publications, educational activities, creative work, forums, and digital content, the project creates opportunities to explore how heritage is understood and experienced today. It also brings together students, teachers, researchers, artists, cultural professionals, and local communities, encouraging dialogue between generations.

Young people have a particularly important role in this process. They are not only the future audience of cultural heritage but also the people who will decide how it is shared and interpreted in the years ahead. Digital platforms and creative formats can help make traditional knowledge more accessible and relevant, allowing stories and cultural expressions to reach new audiences while remaining connected to their communities.

Heritage is also closely linked to sustainable tourism. Albania’s cuisine, music, crafts, traditions, and local stories can strengthen the identity of destinations and create more authentic experiences for visitors. At the same time, tourism should respect the communities and people who keep these traditions alive.

Ultimately, heritage is not only about where we come from. It is about what we choose to carry forward. It can change and evolve with each generation while still keeping its connection to the past.

Heritage is our story. Heritage is our identity. Heritage connects generations. Heritage is our brand.
